First post: Questions regarding ALTEC 612 enclosure - DIY

Yeah, the 100x60 1508 must be really rare as I tried for years back decades ago to find a pair after the local Altec distributor mentioned them, but they remained only a model number until that photo surfaced awhile back. Wound up stacking 511s as a 'make do' that fortunately turned out fairly well.

Never seen any rectangular Altec cab with diagonal damping like in your 618. Is the cab a factory one? I mean the local distributor use to get cabs made locally to cut labor, shipping costs and their resident engineer for whatever reason didn't necessarily have them built to spec.

My 618c cab is definitely factory. The decal shot I provided for the decal project came from this box. It is an early 50s model. Very thin wood, like 3/8 ply on the sides and back. You can see that the fiberglass brackets are pained the same as the inside of the cab. I saw another one just like it on ebay that had an early 400B in it. I should have snatched it up but hesitated and lost out. I'll probably see that one in in Korea next trip.:biggrin2:

I'm having a pair of these thin wood 618s built as I speak. I intend to experiment with damping techniques using archaic materials--cotton, rigid mineral board, Kimpak, etc.

I had other later 618 cabs that were thicker plywood, gray, and had pink fiberglass on the back wall and bottom panel. The silver one in the pic has nothing on the back wall.

The old 612 box I had was darker gray instead of silver hammertone but it had an old fashioned Altec decal on it as well. That was real early 50s too with a gray Hollywood coax and it had the diagonal damping panel, so I'm wondering if that wasn't factory also. This was a long time ago and I don't remember the minute details. Actually, it might have been a 614...really can't remember. I had a lot of premium junk piled up at the time.

Clearly, many of the well known utility cab designs evolved over time. The earliest Altec versions were more resonant and minimally damped by later standards. Some of them ended up particle board and heavily damped.

When I was talking with Mr. Mukai of Western Sound Inc. about this he said the Japanese like the old boxes because they are more "easy listening" and the later ones are more "dry" or "severe."

Yes indeed that 1508 must be rare. I never saw one before, not even a picture. Did Altec make these or it is only a Lansing Mfg. Co item?

Go up to settings and go all the way to the bottom of the page on the left, Click on attachments then select the check boxes of the ones you want to delete. Then go to the bottom and tell it to save changes or something like that. I was converting mine to GIF's in photoshop, I could post about 40 then.

For those Photoshop impaired, Irfanview is free, does conversions and simple color edits, cropping etc. A neat trick- add Ghostscript plugin. Then look for a program called doPDF. It installs as a printer. So you can "print" any page to a PDF. Open in Irfanview and convert the PDF to any graphic file.

Hello,

Have drawn up a digital sketch of a 612 cabinet based upon the iconic cab sketch and the 612C blueprint.

I want to build this cabinet , but I am uncertain if it is good enough , since it is a mix of two...

The height is 29 inches as on the iconic cab ( not 29 1/2 inches on the 612C )
The bass port is as on the 612C - I just put it somewhere on the front baffle. - will appreciate any suggestions on where it should be.

One more thing: should I also make brackets in this enclosure as in the 612C?

Will make new drawings and post them after new suggestions...

PS: The height on the front baffle is wrong (the height should be 22 1/8 but is 22 7/8) - will fix it later on.
